Recorded on Magical Mystery Tour (Parlophone, 1967)
In the first class we'll dive right into the music and multimedia issues that underpin this class. We'll weave discussion of all of the issues that we'll eventually tackle during the course through a series of song and video clips, check out some cutting-edge digital distribution avenues and generally get acquainted with the technologies that influence the music scene online.
No prep is necessary before this class. But after our first meeting, please check out this seminal article called " The Economy of Ideas" 2.03 (March 1994) WIRED 84, by John Perry Barlow. In the article, the former Grateful Dead lyricist, founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and internet revolutionary argues that intellectual property can't be patched or retrofitted to contain digital expression. This was and still is an explosive piece, and sets the scene well for our class. Also, after this class make sure to scour this course page for the logistical and admin details you'll need to know. Make sure you're familiar with the web pages for this course.
